Over the years, as advertising revenues waned, many content creators have taken on sponsored content on their platforms to generate some additional income. Now, I’m not planning to be raking it in with either, but I don’t want to accidentally get into a position where I’m taking on a sponsorship without having this page in place. Most countries have now caught up with their legislation and are requiring thorough disclosure of any paid content. Further – and most importantly – I believe it is the right thing to do.
What sponsored content means
Sponsored content means exactly what you think: I have been paid in one way or another for a piece of content. Often these sponsorships come with some sort of NDA or expectation as to the tone of the content. For example, it is a fairly reasonable request to not be overly negative about the included products or organisations.
So how should you treat sponsored content? That is a question you will need to answer. I’m convinced that my readers are smart, responsible people who can make their own decisions. I will make sure to be as open and honest about it as possible so you can reach an informed verdict on how you want to interpret sponsored posts.
As a rule of thumb: Sponsored content should probably be seen with a grain of salt.
How I treat sponsorships
The following are my rules for sponsored content that I promise to adhere to:
- I will only accept sponsorships that align with me and my audience
- I will only accept sponsorships if I already feel positively towards the product
- I will provide as much information about the sponsorship as possible
- I will try to remain as objective as possible, though I cannot rule out subconscious bias
- I will not accept sponsorships that prohibit any of this in an unacceptable manner
- If a post is a direct result of a sponsorship, I will make this known unmistakably and unmissably at the beginning of the post
- Past sponsorships will be listed at the end of this page and I will include copious links to this page in my posts
- Generally, I will not take on an excessive amount of sponsorships
